SAMA: Seattle Sacred Music & Art is honored to collaborate with THING Festival: A Cultural Celebration at Historic Fort Worden

The eagerly anticipated THING Festival, a 3-day extravaganza of music and arts, will grace the historic grounds of Fort Worden in Port Townsend, Washington, from August 25th to 27th, 2023. This unique event showcases a meticulously curated lineup of diverse performers, with a strong focus on embracing new discoveries and fostering an inclusive environment that welcomes and represents all. In this enchanting setting, attendees will immerse themselves in a vibrant blend of music, comedy, visual arts, speakers, and engaging activities, including captivating performances by two extraordinary indigenous storytellers: Barbara Lawrence of the Suquamish Tribe and Lois Landgrebe of the Tulalip Tribe.

Barbara Lawrence , a member of the Suquamish Tribe, brings with her a deep passion for storytelling and a profound connection to her cultural heritage. As an esteemed member of the Suquamish Tribal Education Administration Department, she has dedicated her life to preserving and sharing the stories of her people. Through her captivating narratives, Barbara breathes life into the traditions and teachings of the Suquamish Tribe, enlightening audiences of all ages. Her remarkable contributions extend beyond her professional endeavors, as she finds immense joy in spending time with her large and loving family, which includes her four children, 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Lois Landgrebe, a storyteller hailing from the Tulalip Tribe, carries the torch of her ancestors' wisdom and traditions. As Chairwoman of the Northwest Indian Storyteller's Association (NISA) in 2017 and 2018, Lois played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting indigenous storytelling. She draws inspiration from the words of her beloved mentor, Vi Hilbert, who emphasized the significance of sharing stories as a means to honor and remember the invaluable gifts of ancestors. Through her performances, Lois weaves together the vibrant history and traditions of the Tulalip Tribe, transporting audiences to a world steeped in cultural richness and ancestral knowledge.

Fort Worden, with its sprawling 434-acre expanse, offers a picturesque backdrop for the festival. Nestled alongside the Puget Sound, the former military base boasts 12 miles of lush, forested hiking trails and 2 miles of picturesque saltwater beaches. Its commanding views of the sound create an awe-inspiring ambiance that adds to the festival's allure. Over the years, this historic property has transformed into a lifelong learning center, perfectly complementing the THING Festival's vision of nurturing creativity and cultural exploration.

Attendees of the festival can expect an immersive experience across four stages, including two outdoor stages that will showcase the talents of an array of artists. The McCurdy Pavilion, a converted balloon hangar turned theater, offers a unique and grand setting for captivating performances. For those seeking an intimate experience, the Wheeler Theatre, an art deco gem, promises to provide an enchanting backdrop for unforgettable moments.

With its remarkable lineup and idyllic location, THING Festival has quickly earned a reputation as Washington's premier destination festival. Recognized by the Seattle Times as such, it has become a must-attend event for music and arts enthusiasts seeking a diverse and enriching cultural experience.

In the heart of this celebration, indigenous storytellers Barbara Lawrence of the Suquamish Tribe and Lois Landgrebe of the Tulalip Tribe will weave their narratives, bridging past and present and sharing the wisdom of their respective tribes. Their performances will contribute to the festival's commitment to honoring and preserving indigenous cultures, offering festival-goers an opportunity to connect with the profound stories passed down through generations.
